£650m Electric Car Grant - What does it mean?
We look at what the new £650m Electric Car Grant means for EV drivers in the North and South of Ireland.

UK EV Grant launch: What does it mean for EV drivers?
has just announced a major relaunch of its electric vehicle (EV) discount scheme, offering up to £3,750 off new electric cars priced under £37,000. For 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø and the wider EV ecosystem, this is more than just a financial incentive; it’s a clear signal that EV adoption is accelerating, and why we are building a reliable EV charging network across the island.
What is the Grant?
From 16 July 2025, private buyers in the UK can benefit from:
- £3,750 off fully electric cars that meet the highest sustainability standards (Band 1).
- £1,500 off other eligible electric cars (Band 2).
- Grants apply only to new vehicles with a list price up to £37,000.
The new scheme is sustainability-led: manufacturers must meet strict environmental benchmarks across battery production and vehicle assembly to qualify.
What else has been announced?
The grant reintroduction comes alongside a UK-wide £63 million investment in EV infrastructure, including:
- £25 million for cross-pavement charging, ideal for households without driveways. Within NI we are awaiting the news from DFI that this set-up for households across NI has been approved and what this looks like.
- £30 million for fleet and depot charging, critical for NHS, local authorities, and logistics.
- Over 82,000 public charge points are now live in the UK, with expansion accelerating weekly.
For us at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø, these trends reflect what we’re seeing in Ireland too: stronger policy equals stronger demand, and that means infrastructure must grow smartly, sustainably, and accessibly.
How will this affect the all-island EV adoption rates?
While this is a UK-specific scheme, it has clear implications for drivers, dealers, and infrastructure providers in Ireland:
- Cross-border incentives: Northern Ireland drivers will benefit directly from the grant, while the increase in second-hand UK EVs may present more affordable options for ROI based buyers in the coming years.
- Fleet operators and logistics providers, many of whom operate both North and South, now have new incentives to electrify.
- Charging demand will rise, especially in border counties, commuter zones, and along long-distance routes.
At 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø, we are pleased to hear this great announcement from the UK Government on the grant support for the purchase of a new EV.
With brands such as , and building lower cost EVs and incentives such as Salary Sacrifice available in the UK, this has encouraged EV adoption.
With this new grant incentive, we look forward to the continued growth of EV sales as we build a reliable EV charging network across the island.
